This cover is STUNNING!!!! Thanks for taking us behind the scenes- so fun to hear about the process (and one that ends happily!) I can't wait to see it in person.
What a joy to read about your process! My degree and most of my professional career has been as a graphic designer and now that I'm pursuing writing, every time I hear "you will have no control over the cover of your book" it terrifies me.
I imagine that every publisher is a little different, but it makes me so happy that you were able to be a collaborator, especially considering your personal connection to the setting. The "I sent my publisher a very chill, reasonable 127 images for consideration" made me laugh out loud. As a designer, I love every bit of direction and inspiration that the client wants to provide. It's so much better than "I'll know what I like when I see it." 🧐
All to say, bravo on the most beautiful cover! I can't wait to enjoy the story inside.
Love this background! I'd also love to hear anything about how this will differ for any international editions. I find it super interesting that some of the covers you referenced look the same here in the UK and some don't. (Especially because this 'summer lake culture' thing isn't something we really have here)
Interesting Q! I'm not sure how it'll go with this book (we haven't discussed international covers yet), but for my other books, I didn't see the cover images until they were finalized and they turned out much like the original US versions — usually a very similar design on a different background color.
Love love the background to creating your cover! As someone who writes creative briefs in my day job, I love this level of direction and competitor / landscape review you provided. It’s absolutely gorgeous and it will POP on the shelves. Well done to you and the whole team! 🙌🏼💃🏻

This makes me feel a little less ridiculous!
